At a time of war marked by expansive polarization, when men play the leading role in conflicts, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is giving them heartening support with its call for submissions on the theme of men and love.
Indeed, this long-standing organization of women promoting world peace is organizing its second international photographic collaboration as part of its global initiative to enlist men for feminist peace. This call for submissions will run until January 1, 2024, and invites photographic artists from all walks of life to share diverse perspectives on how men can demonstrate their love. Today, the image of men is easily acclimatized to that of violence, a degrading caricature that fails to praise this sentimental side of the male sex. WILPF’s call for photographic entries aims to restore this almost-forgotten personality of the male through engaging, revealing images.
With this in mind, Madeleine Rees, Secretary General of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, says: “We are regularly inundated with images of male violence. We gradually become accustomed to them, and all too easily come to equate men and masculinities with aggression and violence. With this photographic collaboration, we want to generate an alternative vision that inspires conversations about men’s capacity to love. We are thrilled to see the images selected by our impressive jury and to share them online and at exhibitions in the many countries in which WILPF works. “
The photographs submitted will be analyzed by a panel of juries made up of experts in the field expressly mobilized for the occasion by Photographic Collaboration Manager Pete Muller. The selected works will then be exhibited online, as well as in a number of locations offering a wide range of visibility, including the United Nations headquarters in New York and Geneva, the European Union, the African Union, and in many of the countries in which the project is being carried out (Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia).
With the aim of better understanding and, why not, successfully curbing all forms of violence, the photographic collaboration organized by WILPF invites participating actors to reflect on and share their work addressing the theme of men and love. This call for submissions is an invitation to contemporary photographers from all over the world to reveal the complex ways in which men expose, struggle with, practice and relate to notions of love in their lives and relationships.
The photographic categories covered by this WILPF call for submissions are photojournalism, open-format photography and documentary. The selected candidates (1 winner and two runners-up) will then be publicly announced no later than February 15, 2024, and will receive $1,000 for the winner and $600 for the runners-up.
