Until October 24, 2021 is presented at ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum the exhibition « This Is Not Africa – Unlearn What You Have Learned ». An exhibition that brings together a wide range of works by 26 great contemporaries from or identified with the African continent.
This exhibition is conceived as a project to promote greater self-awareness by focusing on the work and voices of artists.
He offers both social and political conditions of struggle identified with the continent’s past, present, and future, as well as topics that go far beyond Africa’s borders.
« This Is Not Africa – Unlearn What You Have Learned » addresses issues of strength and language, the provincial era, capitalism, underlying sectarianism and counter-narratives. As the title implies, the works in the exhibition challenge the cliché and the usual Western perspective of Africanness.
The works in the exhibition incorporate mediums such as video, installation, painting, sculpture, photography and performance.
« This Is Not Africa – Unlearn What You Have Learned » is furthermore a recognized project in a joint effort with curators Ibrahim Mahama and Selom Kudjie. A cooperation that has resulted in several exhibitions, but also brings together artists such as Aaiún Nin, Athi-Patra Ruga, Barthélémy Toguo, Bernard Akoi-Jackson, Billie Zangewa, Bolatito Aderemi-Ibitola, Bronwyn Katz, Candice Breitz, Dan Halter, Euridice Getulio Kala, Grada Kilomba, Jeannette Ehlers and La Vaughn Belle, Kapwani Kiwanga, Kelvin Haizel, Meschac Gaba, Moffat Takadiwa, Nástio Mosquito, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Nolan Oswald Dennis, Robel Temesgen, Sammy Baloji, Sethembile Msezane, Tabita Rezaire, Tracy Naa Koshie Thompson and Zanele Muholi.
