In an immersive visual panorama with colors as shimmering as they are deep, contemporary black artists aim to guide visitors’ perception towards a goal, a theme, a precise vision. How can we use the art of color to guide our gaze? The group exhibition “Spectrum: On Color & Contemporary Art” explores this visual dynamic through a body of work navigating different hues and shapes.
On view until 03 March 2024 at MoAD’s contemporary art space, this captivating art exhibition has been curated by MoAD’s first Head of Curatorial Affairs and Public Programs, Key Jo Lee, and will highlight through a multi-generational and international collective of contemporary black artists, the influence of color in the materiality of their art.
“Spectrum: On Color & Contemporary Art” offers viewers the opportunity to analyze how each artist, in his or her own unique way, uses color to create a mood, give a work its own identity, create a framework or communicate an event, among other things. Through an individual artistic approach, the artists succeed in conveying their perspective on a fact, through a prism of color as profound as it is captivating. These contemporary black actors participating in the exhibition are none other than Barkley Hendricks, Tawny Chatmon, Délita Martin, Felandus Thames, Gabriel Mills, MANYAKU MASHILO, Mildred Thompson, Rachid Johnson, Richard Mayhew, Stacey Gillian Abe, Sheena Rose and Tariku Shiferaw.
Alongside the spectrum of color offered by the works on display, “Spectrum: On Color & Contemporary Art” will also feature digital and analog educational tools and programs designed to equip visitors with a refined new language and gaze with which to interfere with contemporary black art through color.
Exceptionally, on February 08, 2024, an artist talk will be held in connection with the exhibition “Spectrum: On Color & Contemporary Art“. A salon discussion on the theme of the exhibition had already taken place on November 18, 2023, with two of the exhibition’s artists, Sheena Rose and Manyaku Mashilo, and was moderated by San Francisco gallerist Jonathan Carver Moore. This new artistic forum will be held between artists Tawny Chatmon and Delita Martin in the presence of Key Jo Lee. This round-table discussion will once again explore how the artists in this group show use color to aesthetically orient our perception of things.
Until March 3, 2024, MoAD offers a captivating journey through a spectrum of diverse and immersive colors in its art space. Contemporary black artists invite you to explore the exhibition “Spectrum: On Color & Contemporary Art“, where a variety of works in appealing shapes and tones reveal the influence of color and contemporary art in transforming perspective.
