“ MEMORIA: RÉCITS D’UNE AUTRE HISTOIRE ” is an invitation to discover the stories and experiences of engaged artists. It allows us to understand the importance of narrative in the construction of collective memory. The artists selected for the exhibition have chosen different mediums to tell their stories: painting, sculpture, photography, video, performance… They have in common the desire to make their voices heard and to reveal realities that are often ignored or misunderstood.
The exhibition “ MEMORIA: RÉCITS D’UNE AUTRE HISTOIRE ” highlights the richness of Cameroonian and African culture as a whole. It testifies to the vitality of the contemporary art scene in Africa and the diversity of voices that compose it. It also shows the importance of intercultural dialogue and the exchange of experiences between artists of different origins.
The National Museum of Cameroon is honored to host this exhibition and to make it discoverable to the public after its passage in France at the Frac Nouvelle-Aquitaine MÉCA then in Abidjan at the Museum of Contemporary Cultures Adama Toungara. Visitors will be able to appreciate the quality of the works presented and the strength of their message. They will be invited to reflect on the challenges of collective memory and the need to recognize the plurality of voices that make it up.

The exhibition “ MEMORIA: RÉCITS D’UNE AUTRE HISTOIRE “, offers the work of 18 inspiring artists who are making the international art scene vibrant. Their unique creations, imbued with sensitivity and reflection on African society and culture, will transport you into a world of creativity.
Asei Dantoni uses a variety of materials to create works inspired by African culture and the urban environment. Ruth Belinga explores issues of identity, race, femininity and spirituality. Aurélie Djiena creates dynamic and expressive abstract compositions using mixed media and drawing inspiration from the shapes and colors of nature. Beya Gille Gacha documents the daily life and traditions of her native country. Josèfa Ntjam uses photography and installation to tell poetic stories about daily life in Africa. Roxane Mbanga creates abstract and organic sculptures using materials such as wood, metal and plaster.
Elsa M’Bala explores issues of identity, gender and migration through video and photography. Charlotte Yonga creates figurative paintings that evoke childhood memories and scenes of daily life, while working to promote art education. Grace Dorothée Tong creates vibrant abstract works that evoke nature and promotes contemporary art in Cameroon. Justine Gaga is a multidisciplinary artist who explores issues of identity, race and gender through performance, sculpture, video and photography.
Enam Gbewonyo, a textile artist, creates sculptural works from traditional African fabrics, exploring themes of identity, African diaspora and culture. Gosette Lubondo creates multidisciplinary works that explore issues of culture, history and collective memory. Carine Mansan uses painting and photography to explore themes of beauty, identity and spirituality. Chowanek is a multidisciplinary artist who explores themes of identity, memory and collective history.
Georgina Maxim focuses on images that are both poetic and realistic, capturing the beauty and fragility of her subjects. Tuli Mekondjo explores themes of identity, spirituality and colonial history through colorful portraits and abstract forms. Kristine Tsala creates expressive characters and imaginary landscapes inspired by Congolese music, dance and culture. She also engages in community projects by teaching art to young people and organizing exhibitions in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
