Adotey Lomotey takes us on a journey of discovery of his photographic art and Ghanaian culture through his solo exhibition “Inherited Threads“. Presented on December 08, 2023 at the Buro coworking space in Ghana, this immersive presentation by the contemporary artist invites the public to a captivating exploration of the history and origins of Kenté.
Through a fascinating combination of photography and video, “Inherited Threads” takes viewers on a spellbinding journey through time and culture, presenting in all its splendor kenté, an emblematic fabric intrinsic to the very essence of Ghanaian heritage. In this immersive work, Adotey Lomotey reveals the disparate links between the profound know-how behind textile production, Ghanaian culture and the beauty of this unique fabric.
The contemporary artist has always developed a particular interest in photography and visual storytelling. The main point guiding his photographic lens remains the need to bring out emotions in his images. In this quest for frozen emotions, Adotey Lomotey seeks to refine his art practice in order to faithfully retranscribe in his photographs the states perceived at the outset.
In this vein, he says: “My approach to photography and filmmaking is based on the desire to evoke emotions. This is sometimes done in particularly creative ways, or through simple elements such as painting images with light and shadow. I’ve always had a passion for photography and visual storytelling, but decided 5 years ago to take the bold step of venturing further into this elaborate art form. During my travels, I’ve met extraordinary people and seen incredible places; all these experiences have influenced my outlook hence the way I present my photos and the stories I decide to tell.“
Adotey Lomotey’s artistic approach is to be able to present Ghana in all its splendor and cultural complexity to the world. From breathtaking landscapes to the country’s rich cultural heritage, he aims to extend this representation to the whole of Africa. The aim is simple: to offer, through his art, the possibility of perceiving the full richness and depth of the societies that make up the continent. He says: “My main objective is to show the beauty of Ghana. I want to showcase the breathtaking landscapes and extraordinary people here. Even if I start with stories from Ghana, my big dream is to tell the story of the whole of Africa. I think it’s important for us who live here to tell our own stories.“
The “Inherited Threads” exhibition perfectly matches his artistic approach, where he takes visitors on a visual journey through the meticulous process of creating Kenté. In so doing, Adotey Lomotey highlights the boundless expertise and patience of local master weavers. These works capture all the intensity returned by the shimmering colors and intricate patterns featured on the fabric, prompting the public to decipher the minute stories and values hidden beneath.
“Inherited Threads” weaves the complex tapestry of Kenté, encompassing Ghanaian culture, craftsmanship and exclusive beauty. The work reveals how the fabric adapts without constraint in both traditional and contemporary contexts. Captivating portraits and video montages highlight the disparity and timelessness of this precious textile, illustrating its perfect integration into modern fashion while remaining true to its ancestral roots. Through the prism of photography and video, this captivating work by Adotey Lomotey honors the intergenerational heritage of Kenté, inviting viewers to appreciate the profound heritage and enduring appeal of this rich fabric.
In her quest to capture the essence of Ghana and, ultimately, Africa, Adotey Lomotey’s art serves as a conduit, inviting viewers to admire the uniqueness and natural beauty of these lands. With each click and reel, the artist’s aim is to succeed in revealing the beauty of the surface at its best, but also to dive deeper, revealing the soul and character that define these landscapes and their inhabitants.
“It’s an invitation to observe the world through a lens that speaks the language of emotions, culture and the unspoken stories of a deeply cherished land. Through my photos and films, I hope to connect with your heart and share the wonderful, untold stories that await you in the frames.“
