Exploring Black Identity: Derrick Adams redefines African Contemporary Art through "Our Time Together"

Derrick Adams is a renowned artist whose work is characterized by a unique artistic pluralism. As an exceptional visual artist, Derrick Adams expresses his thoughts and worldview through a variety of artistic methods such as painting, sculpture, video installations, collage and any other process that expresses the power of his feelings. Much of her work focuses on African identity, using images and models to personify ideals, personalities and objects.

Born in 1970 in Baltimore, Maryland, the visual artist studied at Columbia University and received her MFA and BFA from Pratt Institute. Immersed in a stimulating artistic world, this multidisciplinary artist has focused his art on black culture in America where he paints black Americans in all their facets as well as the influence of African American experimentation on consumerism and art history.

In keeping with his artistic philosophy, Derrick Adams composes his mural “Our Time Together” with photographs of the civil rights movement from the 1950s and 1960s as well as references to MILWAUKEE havens such as the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, Gee’s Clippers and Coffee Makes You Black.

Derrick Adams‘ work reveals the societal impact on the conception of the self as well as the cohabitation between man and object. Derrick Adams evolves in a sphere of reconstruction where he undoes, reshapes, transforms, and superimposes complex and improbable forms and structures to give a clear voice to his art.
This unique and convoluted artistic imprint is noted in all of Derrick Adams‘ works. With this in mind, inspired by Victor Hugo’s Negro Motorist Green Book, Derrick Adams created a remarkable multimedia mural and sculptural installation for the MILWAUKEE Museum of Art. This work, celebrates and highlights the daily rituals and pastimes of black people.
Derrick Adams is a renowned visual artist who communicates his ideals about Black culture in America through his work. The exhibition “Our Time Together” at the MILWAUKEE Museum of Art, along with his many other solo exhibitions, reveals his vision of Black identity and invites contemporary artists to join him in launching the Museum’s East End series.
