Black Rock Senegal enthusiastically announces the return of its new edition of artists-in-residence, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Dakar. This mentorship program, specially designed for emerging artists from the African continent, will run from November 25 to December 20, 2024. Applicants are invited to immerse themselves in this immersive experience, aimed at enriching their creative knowledge.ac

Applications for Black Rock Sénégal 2024, which closed on October 20, have resulted in the selection of 20 artists. During this four-week program in Dakar, they will have the opportunity to participate in an immersive experience, conducive to artistic growth and collaboration. During the residency, the selected talents will work alongside internationally renowned mentors, and benefit from master-classes and creative laboratories.

These exclusive sessions will enable each participant to enrich their artistic practice and discover new modes of creation through contact with seasoned professionals on the creative scene. They will provide tools for artistic and professional development, while stimulating critical thinking and intercultural exchange.

The aim of Black Rock Senegal 2024 is to provide creative resources and encourage critical reflection in artists’ practices. The program aims to create a space for artistic and professional development, as well as a platform for intercultural collaboration to promote emerging African artists. It also aims to offer a new perspective on contemporary Africa through art.

Meet the mentors of Black Rock Senegal 2024

For this fifth edition, participants will be surrounded by professionals from a variety of creative backgrounds.

Serge Aimé Coulibaly

Visionary choreographer and founder of Faso Dance Theatre, renowned for his socially impactful works such as Kalakuta Republik, and celebrated on the international stages of renowned festivals.

Jermaine Spivey

Dancer and choreographer emeritus, his dynamic career includes collaborations with the Batsheva Dance Company and innovative leadership of Spectrum Dance Theater, rewarded by several prestigious distinctions.

Khoudia Touré

As a leading dancer and choreographer, she co-founded SUNU Street, an initiative promoting urban dance in Senegal, while constantly pushing artistic boundaries with her company, KHOR.

Leonard Pongo

Award-winning photographer, recognized for his long-term project The Uncanny, produced in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he examines social narratives through his art, receiving recognition for his landmark contributions to contemporary art.

Sadikou Oukpedjo

A multidisciplinary artist, his provocative works question the human and animal condition. His work has been exhibited across Africa and Europe, provoking reflection and dialogue.
