Sesse Elangwe Ngeseli is a Cameroonian visual artist whose work explores themes such as identity, community development and personal growth. The artist’s portraits serve to critically document certain living conditions in the black community. Her artistic practice is inspired by pop art, surrealism and the aesthetics of realism. These artistic movements, combined with his African heritage, lend an enriching note to Sesse Elangwe Ngeseli‘s work.

Born in 1994 in Ngaoundéré, in the North-West region of Cameroon, the artist developed an early interest in art. With a degree in Political Science from the University of Buea in Cameroon, the Cameroonian artist joined “Le Crayon de D’jino”, one of the six-year art education programs sponsored by Brasserie du Cameroun, in 2006. There he studied drawing and painting before devoting himself full-time to his artistic career.

Now living in San Antonio, Texas, the self-taught artist continues to produce paintings that reflect his directed response to the personal and communal encounters experienced in his cultural and socio-political environment. With African culture as his primary source of inspiration, Sesse Elangwe Ngeseli has also drawn on his immediate environment to create works that reflect his own experience.

The Cameroonian contemporary artist’s work has been featured in over twenty exhibitions worldwide, including “The Last Picture Show” in Paris in 2018; “Transports concordants” in Texas, in 2021, as well as in Africa and Australia. These works are also part of prestigious private collections around the world, and he is also the winner of several awards, including 1st prize in UNESCO’s Patrimonito storyboard competition in 2012 and 2nd prize in the Mur Mur festival in Burkina Faso in 2018.

Sesse Elangwe Ngeseli‘s portraits feature a certain asymmetry in the eyes, a symbol of sudden illumination. The big eyes of his figures testify to a sharp, critical look at the socio-cultural and political conditions of the black community.

With a single glance, Sesse Elangwe Ngeseli captures the viewer’s attention and awakens their senses, inviting them to introspect, to become aware of their innate wisdom and to unite in the quest for a promising future.
