The Bab Rouah gallery in Rabat hosts the exhibition “Women Contemporary Artists of Africa” until March 14, 2023. Entitled “CONTEMPORARY ART OF AFRICA IN THE FEMININE PLURAL“, this exhibition presents the contemporary artistic creation of Africa in the female plural. It highlights the work of 15 to 20 women artists who participate with contemporary works created during the artistic residency organized just before the exhibition begins. This residency brings together women from Africa and the African diaspora to create new works for this special edition celebrating RABAT AFRICAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2023-2022.
“WOMEN COMTEMPORY ARTISTS OF AFRICA” is an event dedicated to plural female contemporary art. It aims to promote exchanges and artistic creation between contemporary women artists from Africa and the African diaspora.
The association ARKANE, created in Casablanca, Morocco in 2009 to promote art and heritage preservation, organizes “ART CONTEMPORAIN D’AFRIQUE AU FÉMININ PLURIEL”. This association organizes each year several artistic events such as international exhibitions of contemporary art, conferences, multidisciplinary artistic workshops, performances in situ, and various cultural events.
The project proposes an artists’ residency in Africa in order to offer a unique space for creation, meeting and exchange between artists. The resident artists will be able to exchange their experiences, work together and inspire each other to create new works. The project develops three themes: Women’s contemporary art in the plural, the crossed glances on the engaged creation of women in Africa and women in the legends of Africa.
The 2023 edition of WCAA will focus on the exploration of female figures who have left their mark on the history and legends of Africa and its diaspora, from antiquity to the present. The project will show the legacy of these women and invite further research on their role in African history.
