Contemporary African art is a growing field, increasingly recognized for its diversity and cultural richness. If you are an artist, designer or mid-career creative with 5-10 years of experience in architecture, design or spatial practice, and you are passionate about (re)imaging the future of your African city, we have a great opportunity for you.

The Prince Claus Fund and the Creative Industries Fund NL are calling for applications for the Building Beyond mentorship program. This program brings together 12 experienced designers, creatives and artists for a year to foster conversation, collaboration and exchange within the cohort, to support each participant in their individual practice and to facilitate exchanges between the cohort and relevant external practitioners.

The program aims to encourage critical design practices and local cultural productions that challenge our ideas of space and citizenship, reaffirm action, and reassert ownership. It seeks to align the physical city with the realities and imaginations of the lived city, offering alternative ideas and methods for addressing the challenges of public space and communities in your city. It is therefore open to mid-career artists and designers with 5-10 years of experience in architecture, design or spatial practice.

The program consists of peer group sessions, guest speaker sessions, and two in-person intensives in the form of “lab weeks” – one on the African continent and one in the Netherlands – where there will be further opportunities to exchange and build your network. Each participant will also receive a €10,000 grant and guidance from mentors to work on the concept of a body of work described in their application.

The deadline for submission of applications is June 15, 2023 at 23:59 CEST. Applications can be completed via the Prince Claus Awards platform.

As an artist, designer or mid-career creative with a passion for (re)imaging the future of your African city, don’t miss this unique opportunity to participate in the Building Beyond mentorship program.

Join the cohort of 12 experienced designers, creatives and artists, and together, let’s think about how to shape the future of our African cities.
