Sakhile & Me presents “Divination,” an exhibition by artist Sekai Machache, which brings together three particular, yet related, bodies of work that appeal to the celestial, the extraterrestrial, and the variety of implication emerging from the intertwined narratives of imperialism and relocation. Also an exhibition curator, “Divination” explores the divine, the spiritual and the complexity of experiences stemming from the tangled histories of colonialism and migration.
The title of the exhibition, “Divination,” appropriately refers to the staging and storytelling made possible by the photographic artist, the focal point of the camera, and the storytellers, performers, and other co-factors that rejuvenate her work.
The exhibition, “Divination,” experiences Sekai Machache voice and dreams through visual works, suspended materials with hand-drawn indigo marks, and a multilingual performative film.
In expressing her art, the contemporary artist works with a wide selection of media, including photography, film and performance. She shapes her photographic practice from digital studio shots where body paint combined with unobtrusive lighting work to create unique images with a sober ambience that seem to emerge from the darkness. In recent years, Sekai Machache has been trying to advance her photographic art and experiment with other forms of design, exploring the outside world in search of inspiring sinuous landscapes.
It is with and through its specialized, experiential, printed, visual and sonic parts of these shifting mediums that the divine nature moves, shows itself and leaves traces, opening a space to search, gather and think.
The exhibition “Divination” is open at Sakhile & Me in Frankfurt, Germany until December 03, 2022.
