Black Rock Global Arts Foundation is pleased to announce its collaboration with 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair as a Special Projects Partner for the next two years. This exciting partnership will include exhibitions featuring the work of established artists from the Black Rock Senegal residency program at each edition of the 1-54 fair, with an opportunity for purchase. Part of the proceeds from sales will be donated as a grant to support the artist residency, which sees talented artists emerge each year.
Until February 11, 2024, the Black Rock Senegal program is pleased to launch this collaboration with the 1-54 fair in Marrakech. This event will feature two alumni of the art residency as well as a symposium bringing together institutions primarily supporting resident artists in Africa.
For its participation in this edition of the 1-54 fair, Black Rock will occupy special project stand n°22. From February 8 to 11, 2024, artists representing the Senegalese residency house will exhibit their creations, making them available for sale, with proceeds expected to support the art house’s activities.
The exhibition will feature works by former residents Léonard Pongo and Devin B. Johnson, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the creative diversity of the artists who participated in the residency program. Each of them explores a variety of disciplines, testifying to the richness of the techniques studied within the Black Rock Senegal program.
Moreover, the relevance and depth of the works reflect the shared knowledge and links forged within Dakar’s small artistic community. The works of these contemporary artists span different mediums and regions, addressing similar themes such as materiality, natural fibers and abstract landscapes.
Leaders of artist residencies, foundations, public museums and art initiatives are invited to participate in the symposium. At the heart of the event will be a discussion on the growing importance of art spaces in Africa. Renowned contemporary speakers include Margaux Huille of Fondation H, Ndeye Filly Gueye of RAW Material, Osei Bonsu of Tate Modern, Bimpe Nkontchou, administrator of GAS & YSF, and many others.
