This original exhibition plunges you into a universe parallel to Nairobi’s reality. Between utopian immersion and stunning perspectives, the futuristic art collective Kairos Futura boldly presents “Hakuna Utopia: In Search of Micro-Utopias”. Running until September 20, this art event takes place at the Kairos workshop in Nairobi, offering an innovative take on the city.
In “Hakuna Utopia: In Search of Micro-Utopias”, discover the creations of seven contemporary artists who explore the concepts of utopia, apocalypse and resilience in the face of the challenges present in this metropolis of 6 million inhabitants. Abdul Rop, Ajax Axe, Coltrane McDowell, Lincoln Mwangi, Neemo Mungai, Shabu Mwangi and Stoneface Bombaa transform Nairobi into a striking utopian place. Through the art and installations of this collective, the themes of social and ecological injustice, as well as hope for a better future, find a powerful voice. Having already captured the attention of the international press with exhibitions in Lamu and Nairobi Space Station, as well as the Utopia Now! initiative in Aspen, Colorado, this group of artists continues to inspire and question.
Beyond the walls of the studio, the artists invest iconic city locations to deploy their work. These spaces, despite their daily challenges, are the breeding ground for artistic and environmental initiatives that drive change on a community scale. These urban oases present themselves as micro-utopias, in perfect resonance with the exhibition’s central message: that of a more beautiful and inclusive Nairobi for all. Through illustrated maps, the artists highlight these places, offering a concrete vision of an improved future.
Visitors to the exhibition “Hakuna Utopia: In Search of Micro-Utopias” will receive a micro-utopia passport, which will be stamped each time they visit these singular places. Each location will feature an artistic installation or experience, inviting the community to participate and encouraging art lovers to explore little-known facets of the city. This unique experience of discovery promises to be as captivating as it is enriching, offering a fresh look at Nairobi and its hidden treasures.
Nairobi’s contrasting socio-economic situation, where a large proportion of the population lives in informal settlements while coexisting with prestigious universities and a dynamic technology scene, highlights the glaring disparities and complex challenges facing the city. This contrast challenges and raises questions about the societal norms and profound inequalities that define the daily lives of many Nairobi residents.
The artist collective Kairos Futura approaches these issues with an innovative perspective, linking art to the construction of a horizontal and inclusive community. They believe in the power of art and the artistic community to create spaces for reflection and dialogue that can catalyze meaningful social change, establishing a form of micro-utopia that can inspire larger-scale transformation in Nairobi society.
By highlighting the city’s social and environmental problems and encouraging constructive discussions about the future, Kairos Futura and their exhibition “Hakuna Utopia: In Search of Micro-Utopias” are taking the first step towards reinventing life in Nairobi society. By providing a platform for reflection, creativity and action, these artists are paving the way for essential conversations and innovative initiatives for the well-being of future generations in the Kenyan capital.
