The sculpture exhibition “Elevation” at the Maison Rouge Hotel in Cotonou highlights the rise of contemporary African art. This exhibition, organized by Maison Rouge and HBMC, features the work of two talented artists, Anna Korver and Sebastien Boko. Their innovative and compelling work celebrates African culture and history while pushing the boundaries of contemporary art.
Sebastien Boko, a self-taught artist born in 1984, has become one of the most respected sculptors of his generation. Introduced to the craft of sculpture by his father, he has honed his skills through artistic experimentation, using materials such as wood, metal and paint to create works that transcend our humanity. His sculptures evoke timeless forms and fluid movements, lending a divine majesty to his creations.
Sebastien Boko‘s art has been widely recognized, winning prestigious awards in national and international competitions, as well as participating in exhibitions around the world.
Her “Africa Miss“, “Transcendence” and “Egungun” series reflect the histories and cultures of Benin and Africa as a whole, exploring themes such as women, masks and our existence as autonomous beings.
Anna Korver is a New Zealand/Beninese artist whose work is nationally and internationally acclaimed. A professional sculptor since graduating from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand in 2003, Anna Korver combines contemporary and traditional sculptural processes in her work. Her works are both minimalist and feminine, inviting intimacy and personal connection. They challenge traditional gender roles and offer a balanced and delicate view of female strength. Anna Korver‘s concepts revolve around the defense and protection of women, emphasizing gender equality. Her sculptures also explore the concept of home as a transitional place, addressing ideas of separation, refuge and protection. Recently, her work has evolved to reflect personal and global experiences, examining the connections between architecture and the human experience.
For Anna Korver, the global pandemic was a time of change and inspiration. First confined to New Zealand, she later moved to Benin, which offered her striking contrasts and unique cultural challenges. This new perspective has profoundly influenced her work, allowing her to explore global experiences of the pandemic and expand her artistic vision.
The exhibition “Elevation” at Maison Rouge Hotel, Cotonou, is a unique opportunity to discover the fascinating works of these two exceptional artists. The sculptures of Sebastien Boko and Anna Korver are imbued with meaning, symbolism and a deep reflection on the human condition.
