« Everyday Secrets » a group exhibition to be discovered at the Luce Gallery in Turin, Italy

On view through September 25, 2021 at Luce Gallery in Turin, « Everyday Secrets » is a group exhibition curated by artist Mosie Romney, featuring new work by artists Chris Lloyd, Bony Ramirez, Collins Obijiaku, Curtis Talwst Santiago, Mosie Romney, and Sydney Elexis Vernon.

Drawing on themes between mysticism, mindfulness, and materiality, Mosie Romney invites each artist to analyze their relationship to otherness and creation. In two new works by the artist, the sporadic space of memory and the psyche is anchored in material references to the present world, depicted through the artists’ use of patterns.

This fragility of memory, the body and the world that holds it is explored throughout the exhibition. Diverting their emotional understanding of the subjects, the artists strive to address the layered components of our physical and otherworldly reality, while drawing on the rich practice of figuration.
With each artist encouraging the norms of their own practice, the works in « Everyday Secrets » explore the supernatural, the theoretical idea of memory, and the intricacies of our distinct inner and outer worlds.

Sydney Elexis Vernon‘s unpredictable images blend collage, oil paint, silkscreen, and charcoal to make stunning, surface-substantial creations that depict explicit miniature narratives.

Similarly, Chris Lloyd‘s visual and sonic works inspire themes deeply identified with the self-reflective excursion. His characters are approached in a marvelous showdown with the self – the self, as well as the deeper self, approached through the mirror.

Such images permeate the artist’s paper works, inspiring the supernatural quality of the tarot. The blade, rose, flames and patterns are obvious themes that change in her creation to address the most private snapshots of struggle, recovery and celebration.

The works of artist Bony Ramirez and Curtis Talwst Santiago oscillate between the authentic and dreamlike. Ramirez’s figures, which appear distorted and larger than usual, are deliberately unusual. Produced from materials as different as his figures, their essence brings physical and symbolic depth to his depictions of everyday existence and Caribbean history.

Curtis Santiago‘s interactive media practice draws on a wide range of materials, including shimmering paint and splatter, to produce powerfully finished creations.

Nigerian artist Collins Obijiaku‘s subjects squarely challenge the viewer with their striking and stunning appearance. Using charcoal, paint, and his unique drawing style, Collins Obijiaku follows the form lines of his figures, uncovering the real substance of his subjects’ structures and exposing the most intrinsic yet misjudged forms of self. Strikingly attentive, Collins Obijiaku‘s works challenge assumptions about likeness by treating it as a kind of deep intelligence.
