Presented until April 16, 2022 at the Galerie Cécile Fakhoury in Paris, the exhibition « Mody: the one who comes from two worlds » of the artist Elladj Lincy Deloumeaux offers to see on huge fragile papers themes and models of Mody, the one whose name in Wolof means « the one who comes from two universes » and who is affected by duality while being a figure of heart left in a few domains, which, circulating between these spaces, is the interstice.
Mody, torn from his unique place by the power of things and others, is the one who left and who will think himself adjusted, checked, crushed by this tear. Leading into a tighter chromatic scope, the works presented are an extension of the research and creation of Elladj Lincy Deloumeaux for his first independent exhibition « One is Multiple » at the Cécile Fakhoury Gallery in Abidjan in 2020.
« Mody: the one who comes from two worlds » brings a reflection around the Guadeloupean heritage of the artist who from an older style and excellence, uses lace as a reminder of the homes, between points of convergence and highlights the various gatherings, dinners and family services.
The artist Elladj Lincy Deloumeaux shares this precious heritage, product of such a long and or simply thoughtful work. He uses the imagery of this adornment, which becomes denser through contact with the African earth and Mody’s individual history, who likewise acquires photos of his mothers decorated with Senegalese weavings, as if to remind us of a remnant of individual and shared memories, which is both the image of the matrix sheet – the envelope of procreative association, the sanctification of water – and the cover of the mortuary. Despite these encouraging implications of custom and sacred assurance, one cannot resist asking whether becoming one with this cloth is really a reassuring encounter for the subject.
Does the luminous ribbon suffocate him? Can we say that he is prisoner of it? By which repressor? According to Elladj Lincy Deloumeaux, Mody, in the grips of the major part of his personality, oscillates between the desire and the rejection to let fall the veil on the storm of his interiority. Draper is a double activity that, in a similar development, covers him and uncovers him, making him apparent by embracing his structure.
Plastically, the weight and surface of the curtain are delivered by the liberal expansion of the material and sand over a significant number of works. The outline, adapted to the extended types of artistic creations, delivers the result of works trunks, baobab or roots of mangroves. They structure the exhibition space in the manner of sections – thus this climbing scenography completes the constitution by Elladj Lincy Deloumeaux of another extraordinary space-time.
