The Kuenyehia Prize is calling for applications for its Prix d’Art Contemporain 2023 until December 31, 2023. West African visual artists between the ages of 18 and 40 are invited to participate in this prestigious contemporary African art event.
Established in 2014 by Professor Elikem Nutifafa Kuenyehia, the Kuenyehia Prize is a flagship program of the Kuenyehia Trust for Contemporary Art. Its aim is to promote contemporary African art on a large scale by rewarding the continent’s leading players and inspiring the next generations of artists to ensure a succession capable of captivating international audiences with exceptional works.
The Kuenyehia 2023 Prize will accept entries in media such as paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and installations. By supporting and encouraging West African artists, the Kuenyehia Prize aims to help them build sustainable artistic careers. The program offers multiple opportunities for candidates to present and promote their artistic practice, with the aim of helping them establish a presence on the international art scene.
Participating artists will have the opportunity to take part in exhibitions, conferences and publications. Previous winners of the competition, as well as shortlisted artists, have had the opportunity to exhibit their work at major art fairs such as the FNB Johannesburg Art Fair in Dubai, as well as at events in the USA and Spain. The Kuenyehia Trust for Contemporary Art offers artists exceptional visibility, opening up career opportunities while providing direct financial support and national and international recognition.
To enter the Prix Kuenyehia 2023, eligible artists will be able to submit their works via the program’s platform until December 31, 2023. Shortlisted candidates will have access to a Kuenyehia Trust for Contemporary Art creative acceleration program, including intensive hands-on training, mentoring and exposure to global best practice.
The first selection also offers shortlisted artists the opportunity to participate in local and international fairs and exhibitions. The winner of the competition, selected by an independent jury, will be announced in January 2024 on the basis of the relevance of his or her work and artistic approach, and will receive a prize of ten thousand US dollars ($10,000).
Last year, the Kuenyehia Prize attracted great interest, with a total of 168 entries from artists in 14 West African countries. First prize was awarded to Malian artist Daouda Traore, whose works captivated the jury with their originality and relevance. Second prize went to Nigerian artist Odinakachi Okoroafor Kingsley, while third prize went to the talented Ghanaian artist Dela Anya, whose creations also impressed the jury.
