Black Rock Senegal has declared the 2022-2023 members for the third year of its artistic residency program.
Established by prestigious artist Kehinde Wiley in 2019, Black Rock Senegal attempts to help create a new imaginary through cooperative commerce and shift the global discourse on Africa.
Named after the volcanic rocks that sweep its coastline, Black Rock is a multidisciplinary artist-in-residence program that brings together scholars from around the world to live and work in Dakar, Senegal for stays of one to several months. The complex includes a house and studio space for Kehinde Wiley, as well as three single-person residence lofts with adjoining studio spaces.
The third year of the Black Rock Senegal program will run from July 2022 to March 2023 and will invite sixteen scholars from around the world such as Pemi Aguda (Nigeria, writer), Sophia Nahli Allison (USA, film), Adrian L. Burrell (USA, film), Gouled Ahmed (Ethiopia, textile), Panmela Castro (Brazil, painter), Ayan Farah (Sweden, mixed media), Enam Gbewonyo (UK, textile), Chinwe Chigbu (Nigeria, photographer), Stephen Leo Hayes Jr. (USA, sculptor) Amina Kadous (Egypt, photographer), Mae-ling Lokko (Ghana, mixed media), Leonard Pongo (Belgium, visual artist), Nasheeka Nedsreal (Germany, performance), Nengi Omuku (Nigeria, painter), Khalif Tahir Thompson (USA, painter) and Paul Verdell (USA, painter).
This year’s residents were selected by a distinguished board of creative professionals: Jeffrey Deitch, curator and gallerist; Reni Folawiyo, entrepreneur; Cathia Lawson, art collector; Aissa Dione, textile designer; Glenn Ligon, artist; and Katherina Olschbaur, artist and former resident of Black Rock Senegal.
