On July 05, 2023, the renowned West African residency program, Black Rock Senegal created in 2019 by renowned contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley, announced its next generation of fellows. Indeed, the artist-in-residence program has already selected the lucky recipients of its artistic support for its fourth edition.
Black Rock Senegal is an artistic residency program designed to support and promote the next generation of artists through collaborative exchange, thereby subverting the global discourse on Africa. From August 2023 to May 2024, a selection of sixteen promising artists from around the world will be hosted at the Black Rock Senegal residency.
The artists hand-picked for this artistic residency experience are: Anthony Olubunmi Akinbola, Kwabena Sekyi Appiah-Nti, Ousmane Bâ, Lilah Benetti, Nicolas Lambelet Coleman, Makhone Diop, Souleye Fall, Timothy Yanick Hunter, Chase Alexander Johnson, Christina Kimeze, Ange-Frédéric Koffi, Ambrose Rhapsody Murray, Samuel Nnorom, Maurice Carlos Ruffin, Ardeshir Tabrizi, Keith Tutt II. This year’s residents are mostly multidisciplinary artists, using a variety of media including painting, sculpture, photography and film, among others, to represent their art in an impactful and immersive way.
They were selected by a committee of creative professionals including Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, a BRS alumnus, Y1, Osei Bonsu, curator of international art at Tate Modern, Kimberly Drew, director of Pace Gallery, Larry Ossei-Mensah, curator and co-founder of ARTNOIR, Antwaun Sargent, writer, curator and director of Gagosian, Adam Weinberg, director of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Artists selected for the residency program stay in staggered periods of one to three months – in the Black Rock compound in the capital Dakar, which offers multi-storey apartments and private studios. This is a great opportunity for these young talents to rise to the forefront of the global art scene.
