The Gazette Café in Montpellier enthusiastically welcomes the exhibition “Myths and Allegories” by Emery BaÏ, a multidisciplinary artist from Benin. From May 30 to June 24, dive into the fascinating universe of this artist who has combined his cultural heritage with a contemporary vision of art.
From an early age, Emery BaÏ developed an unquenchable passion for art. After studying Fine Arts in Benin and Fashion Design in Bordeaux, he decided to move to Montpellier to pursue his artistic research at the Beaux-Arts. It is in this city that he finds inspiration and the right environment for his creative development.
Emery BaÏ‘s work is a hymn to diversity and cultural openness. He manages to create a dialogue between different worlds, oscillating between humor and drama, personal narrative and collective memory. His art confronts us with the contradictory tensions of our society, highlighting the gap between a phantasmagorical vision and reality. With skill, he deconstructs stereotypes by propelling them into a poetic, playful and political dimension, while maintaining an apparent lightness that sometimes recalls the cruelty of children’s stories.
Emery Baϑs muses are adorned with gold and light, ironically recalling the deficits of representation that marked him as a child. His art also explores the process of identification embedded in the collective unconscious, highlighting how power can be artificially manufactured by an artist. He sublimates subjects traditionally excluded from representations of power, giving them a place of honor in his creations.
After four years since his first exhibition at the Gazette Café in Montpellier, Emery BaÏ is back with “Myths and Allegories“, an exhibition gathering works from four different series. Behind a sleek and deceptively candid aesthetic, the artist tackles many subjects using anthropomorphism, symbolism and mannerism as tools of expression.
The result is striking: dreamlike settings where the plasticity of the bodies is voluptuous, haughty postures, proud looks and enigmatic attitudes. The entire exhibition is both spiritual and resolutely sensual, taking visitors on an artistic journey full of mystery and beauty.
Emery BaÏ is an artist who transcends the boundaries of contemporary African art. His creativity and talent have earned him increasing recognition over the years. With “Myths and Allegories“, he invites us to explore the depths of his imagination and discover the essence of his art.
