Tiwani Contemporary unveils the group exhibition “I See You” through Jan. 14 at its facility and features the work of artists Virginia Chihota, Masimba Hwati, Gideon Gomo, Gareth Nyandoro and Portia Zvavahera.
Between Harare and Lagos, the exhibition “I See You” presents a remarkable thought of intercontinental trade and kinship through reflections that actually manifest in sound, sculptural, and two-tiered works.
As an outlet for the companionships developed north of twenty years between these specialists, this exhibition is a marker of time, space, and a huge second in the vocations of these artists.
The artists in the exhibition were educated at the National Gallery School of Visual Arts and Design during the 1990s in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Virginia Chihota, Masimba Hwati, Portia Zvavahera, and Gareth Nyandoro have received international acclaim for their participation in the Zimbabwe Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, under the direction of Raphael Chikukwa, currently the Chief Executive of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
These artists remain close and effectively pursue their careers in Harare, Addis Ababa and Vienna.
The “I See You” exhibition features painting, sculpture, installation and drawing, while capturing the ways in which each artist incorporates and responds to the idea of climate.
Prior to the exhibition, artists Portia Zvavahera and Gideon Gomo were in residence at Yinka Shonibare‘s Guest Artist Space Foundation and conducted individual exploration of adire procedures, knotting and dyeing techniques, printmaking, sculptures and assemblages produced from local materials.
