In all circumstances, whether in the shadows or in the light of day, women have played a crucial role throughout history. Their contribution, though often overlooked, remains obvious and essential. With this in mind, the Kvasnevski Schwartz Projects gallery presents its second group show, “Fire In Her Eyes“, highlighting the paths, practices and significant contributions of women throughout history, through the prism of art. Until May 16, immerse yourself in this immersive exploration of women’s influence on the world and witness their profound impact on society.
“Fire In Her Eyes” highlights the work of female figures such as Adela Beltran, Angèle Etoundi Essamba, Ashleigh Sumner, Hélène Amouzou, Holly Suzanne Rader, Leila Rose Fanner, Mina Boromand, Rezvan Zahedi, Robin Holder and Wrya Eyes. Through a captivating variety of mediums, these ten female artists take viewers on an exhilarating visual journey, guided by women’s art.
From moving paintings and intricate collages to evocative photographs and bold sculptures, each of these creations oscillates between abstraction and figuration, translating the challenges of the past, questioning the present and illuminating the future. At the heart of this artistic space, narratives of adversity and liberation intertwine, capturing intimate moments of resilience amidst struggles against patriarchal and oppressive systems.
Upon further reflection, it’s clear that the theme explored in “Fire In Her Eyes” resonates perfectly with Maya Angelou‘s timeless poem, “Phenomenal Woman“: “I’m not cute or built to fit a mannequin’s waist But when I start telling them, They think I’m telling lies […] It’s the fire in my eyes, And the sparkle in my teeth, The swing in my waist, and the joy in my feet. I am a phenomenal woman“.
The works in this exhibition reflect the feelings of beauty and strength inherent in challenging social norms, as described by the poetess in her verses. Indeed, the fire in women’s eyes acts as a beacon, illuminating the voices of the marginalized and oppressed, providing a sacred space for diverse expressions of female identity.
“Fire In Her Eyes“, through a distinctive artistic approach, seeks to broaden and enrich the dialogue on femininity by adopting a more inclusive and contemporary understanding of women’s experience in the modern world. The ten remarkable figures participating in this celebration of feminine gentleness and power courageously embody this heritage, drawing inspiration from the historical figures and movements that have shaped the course of humanity. They champion the politics of care while boldly asserting their voices and perspectives through art.
Using innovative techniques such as reinterpretation, re-mixing and re-enactment, they address issues that have long been marginalized or downplayed due to classicism, sexism and elitism. Their art thus becomes a powerful tool for deconstructing established narratives and advocating for a truly inclusive and equitable world. Through “Fire In Her Eyes”, these ten female artists invite visitors to take part in this revision of perspectives, and to promote this vision of a world where every woman is valued in her own right.
