Sola Olulode présente « Could You Be Love » au Sapar Contemporary de New York

Sapar Contemporary presents through December 02 “Could You Be Love“, an exhibition of new art creations and drawings by Sola Olulode that offers the artist’s most memorable performance in New York in a darkly figurative space that takes on the engagement of affection.

Sola Olulode transforms the entire world, ordinary and interior spaces, into a strange biology of delicacy and proximity. Love is a social center for black queer public activity.

Sola Olulode‘s inimitable monochromatic works express the insistent idea of desire. Working towards a whimsical variety to become hopelessly in love. She moves from works in shades of blue and yellow to her garden series that fill the edge of a finished green scene.

The creation of color is a focal platform innovation in her work. Shades and flowing tones are not the foundation of the figures. Sola Olulode‘s colorimetric decisions emanate from the material, emotionally marking and enveloping the figures with their vibrancy. She brings the viewer into the voluminous energy of proximity to the other. The thick, heavy contour lines render the mechanics of feeling alive. Instinctive and authentic.

The shift from monochromatic range denotes a new medium of social emotional processing in his work. The changes in the style of hair, clothing and bedding of the characters. The exploration of different openings regarding natural materials and the use of complex but fun controls on the material mean a lot to Sola Olulode.

This translates into the use of indigo and batik wax. She explores a variety of coloring practices and obstruction strategies that leave apparent and intelligible traces of her hand. Especially in the ascending forms of stichting components, circular themes, and flower designs.

Sola Olulode moves toward each material as a snapshot of movement, quickly shifting her canvas methods to create solid gestural prints that interact between the base and close-up view of the figures.

Despite her energetic use of color and primary trial and error with the canvas, there is also an unmistakable spatial verbalization in the artist’s work.

Bodies loose on a lawn, huddled together in a bed, en route and navigating the city together. There is a coordinated spatial temptation through the restrained drawings and variety-filled compositions.

Scenes are developed according to the climate. The result is a remarkable direction of a strange rationality in space. The one that prepares demonstrations of fertile and charming family relationships. Depicting the delicate work of companionship, from holding someone’s hand during the day to snuggling up to them towards the evening hour. Opening up the intersubjective dynamism of closeness through ordinary scenes of shared happiness and care.
