An impressive number of artists of the African scene were put in orbit through the sale of works of Contemporary African Art organized by Artcurial this Tuesday, November 16, 2021.

They include William Kentridge, Aboudia, Pilipili Mulongoy, Bodys Isek Kingelez and Godwin Champs Namuyimba.

On this occasion, the institution sold up to $ 758 514 including fees. Unrolled in several stages, the sale was first attended by the artists of the Hangar. Thus, the work « Simba » by the artist Pilipili Mulongoy found a buyer for one of his creations at a price of $ 50 885 including fees.

The second part of the sale was marked by the success of works by popular artists. A set of four drawings made in 2006, entitled « Drawing for preparing the flute » by William Kentridge, broke the record for the most expensive item at $109,931 including fees. Aboudia‘s historic 2011 work sold for $67,620 including fees. Another major surprise in this sale is the flashback to the Museum of Modern Art in New York with « Conferences of American district » by Bodys Isek Kingelez, delivered at $44,100 including fees, it is an assembly of thin cardboard, paper and transparent plastic. For his part, Godwin Champs Namuyimba sold his work « Whites ropes, whites lenses » from 2019, at $ 33,810 including fees. The quality of their work impressed collectors and art lovers alike, as did artists like Jourdan Tchoffo and Olamilekan Abatan.

The initiative will be repeated on December 30, 2021. This time, with modern artists favored by private and institutional collectors. A large work by Pilipili valued at 130,000 – 190,000 MAD will be offered for sale, as well as the dreamlike representations of nature, an emblematic artist’s work of the Hangar.

Bodys Isek Kingelez will be present with his exceptional « Seattle » tower. The emerging decor of Africa prized by Moroccan collectors will be represented. Alongside works on paper, a work in mixed media, collage and cardboard by Aboudia for an attractive estimate of 330,000 – 550,000 MAD. From East Africa, « la Breughel » by Kenyan Joseph Bertiers, a canvas by Ugandan Arim Andrew and a work on paper by Tsham also.

To honor female artists, works by Ana Silva and Keyezua, as well as Adjaratou Ouédraogo, Lizette Chirrine and Joana Chomali will be offered. Collectors will also find iconic photographs by Malian artists Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keïta.
