A few weeks before his exhibition « OUR LAND JUST LIKE A DREAM » at the Musée d’Art Contemporain Al Maaden (MACAAL), Casablanca, Morocco, the Malagasy contemporary artist Joël Andrianomearisoa presents at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, (Zeitz MOCAA), a large-scale commission, entitled « THE FIVE CONTINENTS OF ALL OUR DESIRES ».
Presented until June 25, 2023 at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, the installation « THE FIVE CONTINENTS OF ALL OUR DESIRES » is supported by the Yavarhoussen Fund, Madagascar, and will be on view in the museum’s atrium.
Joel Andrianomearisoa‘s practice leads him to work in a multidisciplinary manner – materiality and scale being important considerations. Inspired by complex encounters, his sensitive, often vague works are an ongoing series of ever-developing exercises that reflect on the taste and engineering of feelings that all see, but cannot put a name to.
The exhibition « THE FIVE CONTINENTS OF ALL OUR DESIRES » is a celebration of relationships and associations.
For Joel Andrianomearisoa, the work addresses both movement and language – and the ongoing quest for areas of engagement and desire. It develops a perspective on the world that is delicate, vague, unconditional and about the additional possibilities of human contact.
This spectacular work includes six large-scale sculptures that structure a suspended archipelago in a graceful reference to the earthen bodies and geologies of the creative mind, and are developed from the artist’s signature material, dark tissue paper. Introduced into the strict allegorical heart of the museum, the work has been the site’s primary explicit commission at the Zeitz MOCAA atrium for two years.
« THE FIVE CONTINENTS OF ALL OUR DESIRES » is an exchange with the substantial interior of the center, and what survives from the structure’s early silos. It is both in play and in visual pressure with its environmental factors. While appearing as huge dark masses, the light and delicate materiality of the work allows for unpretentious atmospheric reactions.
« THE FIVE CONTINENTS OF ALL OUR DESIRES » is accompanied by a sound installation and an exhibition of 40 drawings – the first major appearance of Joel Andrianomearisoa‘s graphic works in an exhibition. Visitors will also be able to discover an extraordinary collection of furniture designed by the artist.
