On March 18, an artist-led organization, Kairos Futura, will launch the Nairobi Space Station, an initiative that aims to bring creative and sustainable solutions to the city of Nairobi. The team of artists, designers, and scientists is dedicated to imagining, prototyping, and implementing exciting new visions for the future of Nairobi, with a particular focus on ecological issues and urban rewilding.

The Kairos Futura team works with community leaders to develop and implement creative and practical solutions that improve the environment, promote biodiversity, and enhance the quality of life for all residents of the city, especially those living in informal settlements.

Some of the projects the team is working on include creating guerrilla green spaces in informal settlements, exploring innovative solutions to improve water quality, creating a “flying matatu, native tree seed bank,” and providing experiential learning opportunities around imagining the future of Nairobi. The team is also exploring ways to rewild urban areas to promote biodiversity and improve the health of local ecosystems, particularly along the Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Mathare, Kibera and Korogocho rivers.

The Nairobi Space Station will run from March 18 to June 1, with events throughout the city. The initiative will feature several local artists exhibiting their works and installations in the McMillan Memorial Library, the historic venue for the launch.

“The Nairobi Space Station aims to create a future where we live in harmony with nature, not against it,” says Lincoln Mwangi, co-commander of the Nairobi team. “We are committed to working with local organizations and activists to develop and implement creative and practical solutions that improve the environment, promote biodiversity, and enhance the quality of life for all people in the city, especially those in informal settlements.”

The Nairobi Space Station is an innovative and exciting initiative that promises to bring positive change to Nairobi by fostering creativity and community collaboration for a more sustainable and livable future for all.
